Sep07Fieri So, airnwandeenng, elk do not feel, you say? Able to perceive or feel things Having an awareness of one’s environment Experiencing sensation or feeling ability to feel, perceive or be conscious, or to have subjective experiences ability to experience pleasure and painThese are definitions of sentience. How exactly do these not apply to elk? And I don’t know about you, but I have seen plenty of elk on the open plain. Beside the highway. Not in the forest. And I’ve seen their relatives, white-tailed deer, in the suburbs. They eat grass. Grass is almost everywhere. They’re not likely to starve to death. I doubt these elk farms are in the middle of the city. Tell me what you think the animal rights activists would prefer: ALL of the deer being imprisoned and ALL of them slaughtered, or ALL of the deer being free and a FEW killed in accidents? If you had to make this choice for a group of people, which would you choose? It isn’t that hard to understand.

Lee Hall is a woman and, judging from her first book on animal rights, a very smart woman. It is difficult to judge Hall's review based on the excerpt you've provided, so perhaps you're assessment is fair. But consider reading other material by the author and see if she does not present a philosophy of animal rights that can deepen your own understanding and advocacy.

Wait a sec... you've published an entire article here on a fellow activist because she uses tactics you don't agree with? Infighting is a waste, and a sly tactic usually started by infiltrating, undercover federal agents (or, very occasionally, by novices who've been fortunate enough to not have run-ins with "the authorities" yet) who then step back and admire their "divide-and-conquer" handiwork as it destroy a movement. You should know that by now. Who are you really, and who are you working for? If you were actually an activist, you'd know enough not to do that. If you're actually an activist, don't waste your energy and time attacking someone who is working against the very same system that you are. There's much more important work at hand here.

"The University of South Carolina's 19 varsity sports teams are known as the "Gamecocks". The unique moniker is held in honor of Thomas Sumter, a South Carolina war hero who was given the name "The Carolina Gamecock" during the American Revolution for his fierce fighting tactics, regardless of his physical stature or the size of his regiment. A British General commented that Sumter "fought like a gamecock." While the men have traditionally been the Fighting Gamecocks and the women were previously the Lady Gamecocks, this distinction was discontinued in part to help eliminate gender bias in their athletic department, and to discount the oft-held misconception that their mascot is meant to honor/promote animal bloodsport in any way."

It obviously has nothing to do with the promotion of animal abuse--it's history.

p.s. "The University of South California" is not real.

This is such garbage!! Have you ever worked in research? Have you ever critically reviewed results from animal work? Have you ever served on an IACUC?
I have.
http://www.thedailypage.com/isthmus/article.php?article=31607
There are veterinarians all over the world aghast at what they see every day. Only the need for income, and a desire to alleviate some of the suffering, keeps these folks clocking in. No, there is no government oversight. That, too, is a complete falsehood perpetuated by the biotech industrial lobby.
I urge any DVM reading this to take a moment, and remember why you went to school. Animal research is not saving lifes - it is taking resources away from providing health care to American citizens. It is just that simple.
